Memorial Day

Let's remember what this holiday is really about. We all need to take a moment, as we fire up our grills or head to the beach, to just pause, and think and say a little prayer for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen.

Some moving pictures can be found here.

Geography Studies

All the talk over at the 4real forums lately has got me thinking. I had so many plans to teach the girls about the different continents of the world, especially focusing on the people and how life is for children living in those areas of the world. I didn't get nearly as far as I thought. I was frustrated with myself, for not living up to my own expectations. I'm trying to remember that sometimes things don't happen like we plan. So, I've decided to just continue these studies into next year.
But as I look over this past year, I think it might help me to feel a little more accomplished if I post as much as I can about what we DID do. I had posted a few times on what we were doing this past Autumn. This is a continuation of that:
We started with Africa. The girls did the map on the right, first, highlighting the borders and the waters of Africa. The map on the left has Morocco colored in, to show that this was a country that we were studying, since we couldn't study every African country.
The girls also colored a close up map of Morocco (on the right, below), and glued that along with the country's flag and discription to a page for their notebooks.
And using this book below....
they drew a picture of an animal that lives in Africa. The drawings are simplistic and somewhat "cartoonish", but still fun and turned out well. The craft for Morocco was these Khamsas. They had fun making these. The girls have fun making anything "artsy".

(Skylar's is above and Alexa's below)
And of course we read many, many stories about Africa......fiction and nonfiction. A couple of the books we used are pictured below.
The girls really enjoy learning about people of other countries and how they live, especially the children. The stories and the hands on activities are their favorite parts. Social studies and geography have become one of their favorite subjects. Mine, too. :-)

Our Lady of Fatima Teatime

We did end up having a Teatime for Our Lady of Fatima. Here are some of the highlights.....

I was originally intending to make mini blueberry muffins, but then Taylor decided she wanted to try a new low fat cookie recipe. So, since she was willing to let us sample them during Teatime, I nixed the muffins. Taylor played around with food coloring for her cookies and made them this exciting, wild red. She topped them with red sugar. They smelled so good as they were baking.
It was Alexa's turn to set up our liturgical year decorations. She did an awsome job! And then Skylar asked Alexa if she could add one more thing. When Alexa said yes, Skylar added the light blue, cut glass rosary. Perfect! The craft for this teatime was making little vases to put flowers in for the Blessed Mother. I used Danimals yogurt containers because of their size and shape.....perfect for holding little child-sized bouquets of flowers! The girls painted them before teatime, so they could be dry by the end.

(Alexa's is on the right, Skylar's on the left)

Then we began our Teatime with the prayer found here. It was time to eat the goodies that Taylor had prepared earlier in the day.

They were delicious! As we ate, we discussed this book that Taylor, Skylar and I had read last year. I read a few parts from the book while the children colored some coloring sheets. We found Fatima on our world map earlier in the morning. Then they went out to pick flowers for Mary. Their bouquets turned out so nice, don't you think?

The Little Things

I received my first bouquet of flowers from my little man yesterday. He was so adorable. He said, "Here you go Mama, I got a present for you!". He looked so proud as I thanked him profusely and told him what a sweet boy he is. (Thanks for "assisting" him, Taylor.)
And it was just a few minutes later that Alexa presented me with a "flower fairy" that she made out of real flowers. The dandelion is the head, and the pink petals are the dress. So creative!
These are the kinds of things that make me smile and realize what is most important in life. :-) I'm a lucky mama.

May, The Month of Mary

On Mother's Day, I changed our family altar to honor Mary, our Mother. I used a piece of dark blue fabric that has simple, little light blue tulip shapes on it. I placed our statue of the Blessed Mother on a raised candleholder that I put under the fabric. Then, I got our a prayerbook that has Marian devotions in it, and placed it on the side. There was a plastic blue rosary on the other side, but this morning I found a light blue cut glass one. I needed a delicate candleholder, but couldn't find what I was looking for it my "stash". So I made one, very simply. I took an inexpensive, plain glass candle holder, and wrapped it in sheer, light blue ribbon, then tied it. Then, in my Liturgical Year Boxes I found some dainty ribbon craft flowers. I just wired those around the knot in the ribbon, placed a tealight inside and that's it. So simple, but it turned out pretty nice, I think.
We are doing many activities in honor of Mary this month, too. Tomorrow, for the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, I'm planning on having the girls do some coloring sheets of the blessed mother. I'm also going to take advantage of all the flowering plants in our yard. The girls, and possibly Evan, will make vases out of the little Danimals containers. They are the perfect size for mini bouquets and are a neat shape, too. I haven't figured out exactly what they'll use to decorate these cups, but I think it will be cute. Then they'll pick the flowers to put in their vases, and place them on the altar.
Alexa, Sky and I played Mary Match earlier this week. They really enjoyed it! And Evan and I will use his special little box in honor of Mary to honor her a little later this month. At some point I plan to do a Teatime in honor of the Blessed Mother, too. It might even be tomorrow, depending on how things go. ;-)
I'll try to keep you posted on our activities this month, and I'd love to hear your ideas, too. So feel free to leave me a comment sharing what you do to celebrate Mary, in this beautiful month of May.

Following the Iditarod

Skylar's co-op group learned about the Iditarod for the second half of the school year. I must say, I learned from her because I was pretty clueless about this race. They learned about the dogs, the mushers, the town of Iditarod and Alaska. Then they followed the race as it unfolded. They even had a "musher of choice" to follow and cheer for. Her name is Melissa Owens and she was home schooled. And at the very last co-op meeting, each child did a presentation on something they learned. Skylar did hers on the dogs. She was nervous, but did well.
It has been another really successful and enjoyable co-op year. We have some awesome moms who make it all possible and I am so thankful that the kids and I are a part of it.

Nature in Our Yard: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

We are so blessed to have a strip of woods lining the yard at the back of our house. These are old woods, with very tall trees that were never torn down when this plan was built. And because of those woods, we don't have to go on a nature walk away from home to do nature study (although we all really enjoy those trips). But more recently we are coming to realize that being so close to nature has it's, shall we say, not-so-positive side (I hate being negative). In all fairness, though, we'll start with the things we enjoy.
THE GOOD:

THE BAD:
The picture above shows an anthill....more like an ant condominium...over near the swingset, of all places...grrrr)
This is a hole of some sort of burrowing creature that is wreaking havoc on our lawn (above), and this is one of those burrowing paths, though it's hard to see in the photo (below). It's path runs from near the bottom left corner up to near the upper right corner.
THE UGLY:
Ok, so maybe not "Ugly". Just not my cup of tea. My girls and Evan sure enjoy them. But when I see them like this...
Blah
Yuck
Ewwwwww
But with all the "bad" and "ugly" that have been showing up lately, I still wouldn't trade this house with it's mini-forest lining the yard. I just have to take a deep breath and deal with these critters. *sigh*
Oh, and our pest control guy is coming on Wednesday to see what we can do about the burrowing critter. And we are looking into a lawn care company to help rid us of those nasty ants. :-) God helps those who help themselves, right?

Our Parish Spring Festival

Our parish's Spring Festival was last weekend. This has become a tradition for our family. At least for Alexa, Sky and I. This year, G-ma was in town! So, she was able to join us and we took Evan this year, too.

The weather wasn't too promising, but we didn't care.

Skylar likes the bouncing castles.

Oh, and this year the Chick-fil-A cow was there. He gave Evan a big hug....and me too, actually and that was quite unexpected. Everyone loves the cake walk. Even though we usually don't win any cakes. Skylar did once, a few years ago. G-ma took Evan around for his first time on the cake walk.

But the highlight for the kids is ALWAYS the pony rides!

We had lunch there, too! (Thanks G-ma!) Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Enjoy the sun! (or whatever weather you might be having)

He's Back Again!

Mr. Turtle came back again! As soon as Skylar spotted him out the window near our crabapple tree, everyone stopped what they were doing. We always make time for his visits, then let him go. I never let the children keep him for more than 15 minutes or so, because I'm afraid he'd accidentally get injured. He first came on the day we moved into this house. It was like he was welcoming us. Here's some pics from this visit. At first he didn't want to come out of his shell.
But then, within a few minutes, he got more comfortable with us.
He was out, exploring the deck in no time.
Evan didn't want to actually touch him, but he did wave "hi".
Mr. Turtle even made a friend. A rather large, plastic friend. ;-)
Soon it was time for Taylor to set him free again.
Oh, and Evan added the fourth name......"Turtle". So his name is now officially Awkward Rusty Adeline Turtle.

Come back soon, Awkward Rusty Adeline Turtle. I think we'll stick to calling him Mr. Turtle, for short. :-)

Have a wonderful weekend!
