Daybook Looking Back on Advent (long post warning)...but pictures included so it's okay.

 For today, Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012
(actually very late the night before through...umm Thursday night...took me a while to complete this thing!)

I am thinking:
Do I really want to start this post so late at night?  It's been so long and I miss it, so...yeah, I'll go for it.

Outside my window:
It's very cold, and dark of course.  It's not raining or snowing or windy.

I am wearing :
A new purple jammies set that I got from my in-laws for Christmas.  The pants have peace symbols and winking smiley faces on them.  They would suit Skylar very well.
Doesn't matter to me what's on them.  All I know is they are a soft, warm fleece and I never want to take them off.
 Ever.
 It has a matching solid purple top that is cotton, with a plunging neckline I could do without.  But the pants are delish.
 And I'm wearing some purple and pink striped fluffy slippers.

I am hearing:
Evan's peaceful breathing and the white noise of the sound machine.

I am hoping:
Evan gets over his stomach virus quickly and that no one else gets it.  Part of what makes Winter such a crappy season is the abundance of illnesses.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am also hoping that my kids enjoyed their Advent season and that I didn't wreck some wonderful moments with my "stressing tantrums".
Grownups can be such babies sometimes!
(yes, I am refering to me)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our simplest traditions are always a hit.
Evan gets so excited when I bring out our Christmas picture books and Children's Nativity sets.  We have the Little People Set and the Playmobil Nativity.

The kids always enjoy baking.  I know they would prefer we bake from scratch
(simply because it tends to be messier and messier = funner around here).

And we do, on occasion, but I'm ok with using ready-to-go-dough.
I know this disqualifies me as a contender for "Mom of the Year", but I've made my peace with that.

The Christmas parade was exciting.  We haven't seen it since Taylor and Skylar were really little, so we were all looking forward to it.

.

 We had fun during most of the parade and it was a beautiful, chilly day.
Taylor invited a friend to go to the parade with us, but unfortunately she got sick partway through and her mom had to come and pick her up.  Poor thing.  Not the best experience for your first time at a parade, which is what it was for her.
We need to take her with us next year so she can have a much more pleasant parade experience.

 The parade was so cheery and festive.......
............and long,
 so Evan didn't quite make it to the end.
I'm lovin' the shoes.  They must share my affinity for Elf Culture.  ;)

Thankful for:
Meaningful Advent Traditions

A local Catholic high school hosts a St. Nicholas Day Carnival of Saints every year.
We've attended for the last 6 years or so, and they look forward to it each Advent.

Our Saint Nicholas Day Celebrations here at home are a tradition I started with my kids a few years ago.  They awaken to find a few small gifts and treats in their shoes.  This year, though, they found their treats in cozy, new slippers.

We own The Miracle of Saint Nicholas, but the other two are from the library.  Evan's favorite is The Baker's Dozen.

This is supposed to be a the Mitre of Saint Nicholas.  Before you go all "cookie critic" on me, you must realize I cut them "freehand" and it was a last minute idea for the treat for Evan's K Group which I was hosting that day.  It got cancelled due to many ill children, so we enjoyed them at home as part of our own celebration.  Poor sick K Group....
but very fortunate older siblings in our house.  ;)

This year we participated in our home school groups Advent Retreat for Children.
The children were divided into two age groups.
There are some amazing ladies who volunteered to organize and run this and it was a pleasure to see them in action with the kids.  Skylar and Alexa were in the older group, and I stayed to help out a little with Evan's group.
My mom was still in town from her Thanksgiving visit, so she assisted with me.
It was a great morning focusing on the real meaning of Christmas with the children.
I have pictures from this event, but don't want to post them without the permission of the wonderful mom-in-charge of our group.

Our Advent Wreath is always special and important.
Unfortunately, I was not so good at remembering to light it at mealtime this year.  It did sit there, in the middle of our dinner table, reminding us of this important season of waiting.  But I just kept forgetting to light it.
As Sky would say, "Epic Fail, Mom".
Well, at least I can get another year out of those candles.
(I'm a glass half full kinda girl)
Guess I should have cropped out the paper plates and water bottle first.  Oopsie.
Next year I hope to majorly simplify my plans.
But it's going to be hard to decide what to remove.
It will take some serious thinking about what wasn't necessary this year, and what just didn't go over well.  There are certain things the kids would really miss.
Some of their fave's have nothing to do with the true meaning of Christmas, but they don't take away from it, either.
If I tried to skip these traditions, my children would at best, stop speaking to me and at worst, probably tie all my shoelaces together and stick bleach in my shampoo bottle.

So for starters, I think we'll keep decorating those gingerbread houses.

My kids couldn't imagine December without them.

Praying for:
My dad's wife, my sister n laws mom, John's sisters, a local family that lost their young mother, another local family that lost their 15 yr. old daughter shortly before Christmas.....
From the kitchen
 in December it was fudge, cookies, and sweets and treats of all kinds.  The regular meals were rushed quite a bit some days, so usually not the healthiest.
But we are gettiing back on track, so our diets need to be brought back to the real food groups.
Not the ones in Elf (candy, candy canes, candy corn, sugar and syrup).

Looking back:
to Skylar's 13th birthday!  My children are growing up so fast!   I have two teenagers now?!
What?!
How?!

Looking ahead:
Some birthday parties that my girls are invited to, Evan's K group getting back in session, Girls Club, karate, dance, Taylor getting her permit, Taylor turning 16!, Taylor's trip to NY, some exciting field triips for the younger kids, a Valentine's Day party for the younger kids.....

In my heart:
Cherishing moments we spent with family on our trip to Pittsburgh.
(so many photos in the post already...will save those for another day)
Right now:
hittin the post button on this sucker and hittin' the sheets!

This week:

is practically over, but we do need to clean tomorrow and take down the tree....and Sky has a Christmas party to attend, and Alexa has dance....and Tay hopes to go out with a friend.

Well, this took forever to write.  I know there were a ton of pics and  a lot of focus on this past Advent, but I wanted to reflect on it a little before moving on.

Sorry if it was boring, but I like to have it recorded her for myself, too.

Well, have a great weekend!

It Ends This Way

The Christmas Season is over. It ended yesterday with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. When I made all of those sugar cookies last week, I actually planned ahead for a Teatime to celebrate this last, special day of the Christmas Season. (wow....I actually planned ahead....it's okay to be shocked)
We don't seem to be able to get everyone together on the weekend, to just relax around the table, having tea and cookies and reading and crafting together. Weekdays just work better for us. So today, the day after The Baptism of Jesus, we had our Teatime. It was very simple.....very, very simple.
Here are some pictures to prove it. We used the same, basic, white, simple teacups (or chocolate milk cups, in Evan's case) and plates. The decorations were very simple, too, although I had planned to put seashells around the candle and picture, and just totally forgot. They (the seashells) rudely reminded me of my forgetfulness later, when they stared at me from the top of my dresser, after teatime was over. I set them there so I wouldn't forget to take them downstairs. That worked well (sarcasm).
The cookies were simple and basic "looking", but quite delicious tasting! I read from our Children's Bible as the children ate their cookies. We discussed baptism and what it must have been like for John the Baptist to be the second cousin to the Messiah! We also did a very basic craft using seashell border printouts and an image of The Baptism of Jesus that I printed out. They decorated around the image with sequins.

(Skylar's, then Alexa's, then Evan's)

On days when we have more time, I really enjoy taking our time and making the table look extra special and doing a more elaborate craft. But some days don't go as planned and time does not allow for a long leisurely teatime. So we go with the flow. A shortened, simple teatime is better than none at all, I think. And regardless, the kids are still learning, and memories are still being made.

Do you do Teatimes with your children? How does it work for your family? Hope you have an enjoyable week, whatever your plans may be!

~~~Daybook for a New Year~~~
For Today: January 3, 2011
First Daybook of 2011
I am wearing:
blue and green striped jammie pants and a green long sleeved T. I also have a soft green apghan over my shoulders because my cozy favorite-robe-in-the-world is in the dryer. And I have on two pairs of socks. I need to get some sort of slippers because these floors are freezing and winter is not ending anytime soon.
I am hearing:
the heater running
I am thinking:
how much I love my family....near and far. And how much I miss them when they are far.
I am remembering:
how much fun the kids and I had on our Christmas visit to see my family. I have not laughed that hard in a long time. It rejuvenates the soul to laugh like that and be surrounded by people that love you as much as you love them.
I am planning:
wintertime school. I want to embrace the seasons and try to make every season fun in a variety of ways. It just takes more effort when I'm at the beginning of my least favorite season of all. It's hard to think "fun" when you are freezing. ;)
I am reading:
Mostly been reading stories to the younger children, but I have 2 books I want to read. The Five Love Languages of Teenagers by Gary Chapman and Before I Go by Peter Kreeft. Maybe having some cozy moments with these books will help me to enjoy Winter just a bit more.
I am praying for:
the unborn and their mothers. For anyone suffering from sadness, lonliness, fear. For anyone without a family.
I want to remember:
how Evan has been so "into" Rudolph this year. He loves the movie and the story and talks about Rudolph and Clarice pretty often, like they are friends of his. It's so cute. He loves it when Clarice sings "There's always tomorrow, for dreams to come true....". He's my baby and he's 4 1/2 so moments like these are like sand falling through my fingers. I want to hold on to them, but they are slipping away. So thankful for memories.....and photos for when my memory fails. :)
I am hoping:
to get back into a good, solid groove, with fun thrown in. Coming off of the festive Advent and Christmas seasons can knock you down and make you feel at a "low" after such a long celebratory "high". But this year, I'm trying to just keep riding that "high" and using it to help me keep motivated through the long winter weeks ahead.
The rest of the week:
Sky and Evan are sick. They've each had fevers and sore throats and headaches. They seem to be getting better, but Evan still seems congested. So I'm not sure what this week will hold. Normally it would be karate for Sky and Pre K Group for Evan but we'll have to see. Taylor has play practice all week and Alexa and Sky might have Girls' Club. Not sure. I really haven't gotten out a calendar to even look at this week. I need to do that.
From the kitchen:
soup, pasta, mini pizzas....not sure what else. I haven't been to the store since we got back in town. John went for us yesterday, but he just usually does very general shopping....not the nitty gritty ingredients that my recipes call for. I'll have to make a run by the end of the week, I'm sure.
We are learning:
Alexa will start back on her "trip around the world" with CHC. I need to get Sky going on some good Science lessons. Evan will do some Winter Fun School soon. I need to get moving on lots of plans, I see.
Liturgical year plans:
Today is the feast of The Most Holy Name of Jesus. After the rosary this morning, we shall recite this prayer. Tomorrow is Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. I'll have to see if I have a book about her on my shelf. I'm sure there's a story of her in one of our many
saint books. Sunday is The Baptism of the Lord....might do a Teatime for that.
A picture thought:
my camera is upstairs where Evan is sleeping, so this will have to wait.
*~*~*A Simple Woman's Daybook*~*~*
For Today: December 13, 2010
First Snow Edition
I am wearing: Light blue, striped jammie pants and a long sleeved blue T. High black socks and two hairbands on my wrist. As you can tell, I'm not exactly ready for the day.
I am thinking: of how we only have 2 weeks left until Christmas and although I still have plenty to do, I want to savor every minute of it. It's such a fun and memory-making time of year.
I am hearing: The heater running, Evan watching Arthur's Christmas in the other room, and the garbage truck outside (at least I think it's the garbage truck).
I am praying for: peace.....in our home, in this country, in the world.
From the kitchen: leftovers tonight (pulled chicken and bruchetta chicken), and beyond that.....let's just say I need a trip to the store. Lots of baking and candy making will happen this week.
The liturgical year celebrations: Today is the Feast of Saint Lucy. A Teatime and candle rolling sound just about perfect for it. Maybe we can make some "candle cookies" too. We'll see what time allows for.
Plans for later this week: hmmmm.....karate and preschool group, Christmas shopping, baking and perhaps a trip to walk through Old Town (if the temps warm up a tad). It's so pretty in Old Town this time of year.
There's also a Drive Through Nativity this coming weekend that I'd like to check out. It's being put on by a local church.
Skylar's Birthday is tomorrow! And even though it is, she is going with her Squire Roses group to sing Christmas Carols and help with Bingo at a local nursing home. She's got a big heart. Her birthday party will be this Saturday.
I am remembering: family members that have passed away and will be missed this Christmas. I want to remember them, and talk about them as we celebrate.
I am reading: The Advent Reflections book I mentioned last time. I can't remember the name of it and it's up in my room. It's been a nice way to begin or end the day, depending on my day.
Also reading Jotham's Journey with Alexa and Sky. That's a very interesting Advent journey. We read Tabitha's Travels last year and I used to read it to Taylor when she was younger, but in the Spring, we invested in Jotham's Journey and Barthomew's Passage. We'll do Bartholomew next year. So glad I have the whole series. These are worth passing down to grandchildren.
I am enjoying: this Advent season with all it's preparations. And seeing Christmas through my childrens eyes.
I am thankful for: this warm house. I opened the door to see John off this morning and WOW is it cold! And such a bitter wind is blowing!
From the schoolroom: Still going on with the basics so we don't fall behind. I hope to do some "Christmas School" with Evan this week. Should be fun!
A Picture Thought:
Right after we decorated the tree this year, the kids got a little silly and "creative" in posing for pictures. :)
